The J.F.K Quintet - Young Ideas [New Rip: From The Archives]

[This was recently reposted in another blog but I was quite unhappy as it was one of my earlier inferior mono rip from ages ago- dug up the original vinyl last night for a new true stereo lossless rip- prestontw]

The 'J.F.K' Quintet - Young Ideas - Riverside RLP 9424 - Riverside First Pressing, Black Label, Stereophonic

Ray Codrington - Trumpet
Andy White - Alto Sax
Harry Killgo - Piano
Walter Booker Jr - Bass
Carl 'Mickey' Newman - Drums

Recorded: Plaza Sound Studios, NYC (No date given; 1962?)

Produced by Orin Keepnews
Recording Engineer: Ray Fowler
Album Design: Ken Deardoff
Photos by Steve Shapiro

Released: August 11, 1962

Besides having one of the coolest monikers in Jazz history, The J.F.K Quintet also had a pretty unique sound: part hard bop, part modernist, and almost proto avant garde/'new thing' (particularly on side B). I also detect a strong Coltrane/Ornette influence on sax player, Andy White, who later went on to have a fruitful career as a Coltrane scholar,  among his many later achievements. Wonderful, wonderful record, can't recommend it enough. Solid, but average fidelity - Riverside pressings were always subtandard but pretty good though for a 48 (!) year old record.

  5. Never heard of these guys - what a discovery. Definitely worthy of rescuing from obscurity.

  9. THE J.F.K. QUINTET - YOUNG IDEAS

Many thanks for this rarity! I'm happy to see you digging into what Fantasy never reissued on CD. There are still many 1960s Prestige albums they never got to (several by artists who also recorded for Argo/Cadet by the way), and also a few Riversides. One Riverside I recently suggested on another blog was "Lennie McBrowne - Eastern Lights".

This was the second and last album released by The J.F.K. Quintet, but I have seen it claimed that they recorded a third album that never was released. "Young Ideas" is an excellent album and one can hear that new ideas were in the air - this is not the 50s any longer. At first I thought the initial track sounded silly, but it grew on me, and now I find it quite memorable.

The covers say "stereo" but this is an early rip that it is mono. Do you think that you could redo it in stereo? That could also fix the problem that Bhowani mentioned above with "Alone Together" being cut off before the end.
