Well, let's begin this week by posting a wonderful gem by the ex-Mingus sideman and ultimate Argo unsung hero Gene Shaw! Shaw's body of work on the label was relatively brief, but the quality of this work places him on equal footing alongside such Argo/Cadet legends as Ahmad Jamal and Ramsey Lewis.
This is the second, and middle of his wonderful three sides on the label, beginning with Breakthrough (LP 707), recently reissued on CD by Dusty Groove and culminating with the Richard Evans arranged Carnival Sketches (LP 743) which was just reposted recently on the OIR blog. The rapturous reception to OIR's reposting along with a recent Gene Shaw listening binge inspired me to dig up this third elusive side. Just Ok/uncertain sourced rips have been floating around for sometime now, but this is a nice rip from the glorious original 1964 Argo deep groove vinyl...
Wonderful, wonderful side, may even be the strongest of his three sides as it's more representative of his working band in Chicago of the early 1960s, with mostly originals by Shaw and his sideman. Nice fidelity off another bargain bin acquisition, sure to bring a wide smile to your face...
Get it
What a treasure! Thanks for sharing these fine old sides.

ReplyDeleteReally a great post! One of the purest trumpet sounds ever. And also very intense like in in his reading of Memories Of You from Mingus' Eastward Bound. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteAmazing post. Thanks for such a truly sweet blog.
ReplyDeleteAs a purveyor of 'uncertain sourced rips'(from usenet some four years ago) may I think you for this welcome upgrade!
ReplyDeleteBy coincidence my copy of the Breakthrough CD arrived this morning, well worth spending one's hard earned money on!
Nice one mate - thanks for this.
ReplyDeleteThe music is great - the commentary adds to the joy of it. Thanks for your love of jazz..
ReplyDeleteYou've always had a reputation for high quality rips. Thank you much.
ReplyDeleteSimply Wonderful. Thanks
ReplyDeleteAlways my favorite of Gene's and maybe the best Argo, period. Sounds like a long lost Jazztet lp. "Travelogue" is wonderful.
