Harold Harris - At The Playboy Club

Harold Harris - At The Playboy Club - VJ LP 3036 - Vee Jay Original Pressing, Rainbow Label, Mono

Harold Harris - Piano
Lennell Glass - Bass
George Harps - Drums

Recorded - 1962?, Playboy Club, Chicago

Produced by Sid McCoy

Released - 1963?

I'm in two minds regarding this side. On one hand, this is a nice bit of 'lost' Chicago jazz, a nice piano trio side by the rather unknown and forgotten local player Harold Harris.... But on the other hand, the cover and the album's 'concept' does really betray the worst stereotypes of the 'cocktail jazz' scene as commercial, superficial and corny... Playboy Club?!

It's a pleasant listen though, not in the league of Argo's masters Ahmad Jamal and Ramsey Lewis, but perfectly acceptable nonetheless. This is the second of Harris' two sides on Vee-Jay and his final ever recording. Harris then spent most of his subsequent career with 'The Hef' as the house pianist of Chicago's original Playboy Club. Nice fidelity off the original pressing mono vinyl.

Get it

  1. I'm looking forward to hear his piano giving an impressions of his house ambiance which kept him nailed to the ground.
