I'm excited to present another rare and elusive Prestige soul jazz side: Eddie Bonnemere's Jazz Orient-ed! Bonnemare is also one of the most obscure Prestige artists in the catalog; he doesn't even have his own Wikipedia entry! He's recorded sparingly, with some additional Roost dates and private pressings, but as far as I can tell he's mostly been based as a jazz educator in the New York area, although he did give Ray Baretto his first gig playing in his combo...
This side is certainly on the 'lighter' side of the soul jazz spectrum, a mostly latin jazz -based effort that occasionally experiments with some traditional Japanese folk songs. Kenny Burrell on guitar is perhaps the most well known player on this side. So nothing heavy here, just something rather pleasant to listen to, chill...and mambo! I also enjoyed the striking cover which walks the perilous line between just being kitsch or just plain offensive... . (paging.... crap jazz covers ) Solid fidelity off the original heavy mono Prestige vinyl.
Get it
Thanks for this gem !
ReplyDeleteI'm discovering so much good music with your blog.
Agreed, incredibly kitsch in concept & design. Whoever conceived this was probably drunk on sake! However, it's certainly listenable though unsurprisingly forgotten. Great discovery anyhow, you're truly the Indie Jones of blogville!
ReplyDeleteTotally new to me!Another rare find! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThank-you.
