Back again with a nice rarity - Prestige Moodsville's Volume 4 with Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis and Shirley Scott! This is a very pleasant and I dare say, romantic entry in Prestige's attempt at mood music with muscular playing by Lockjaw with Shirley providing nice accompaniment on the piano (switching off from her usual organ groove) This side is also important for both Shirley fanatics and Prestige completists as Track B4 - 'Man with a Horn' was not included on the now long OOP OJC CD reissue. Now the Shirley Prestige discography is complete! Solid and booming fidelity from the original Moodsville mono vinyl.
Get it
Holy Moly!

ReplyDeleteEddie "Lockjaw" Davis With Shirley Scott
ReplyDeleteWhile Fantasy in general did a great job of reissuing the catalogues they had in their possession, it was annoying when they sometimes lopped off tracks from twofers. This is a case in point. As you say, all tracks came out on CD except the last, "Man With A Horn", which I think is one of of the best tracks on the album. So, even in those cases where only one track is missing from an album, I think you do a great job by providing the complete contents of them. I have now burnt a CD-R of the CD tracks plus your "Man With A Horn" and in album order, thus enabling me to finally hear the whole album as it was originally presented. So, many thanks for this and other "one track" albums. They are important too!
Worth noting is that on the very same day as the present album (January 31, 1960) the same personnel (with Scott switching to her more customary organ) also recorded a Christmas single, "The Christmas Song"/"Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" (Prestige 45-186), which has been reissued on the CD "The Christmas Collection".
As for the Shirley Scott discography being complete, there is however an odd circumstance worth mentioning when it comes to her album discography. The Prestige album "Stompin'" (PR 7456), usually attributed to her, had five tracks with Scott, which all have been reissued on CD. But it also had a sixth track with Don Patterson on organ ("This Can't Be Love") which hasn't come out on CD. This track is so elusive that it isn't mentioned in discographies and there have been Internet discussions where its existence has been questioned. But the album cover clearly mentions Don Patterson's name, the track is showing on eBay scans, and a contemporary review mentions it. The album would also have been too short without it.
So "Stompin'" is another album you could track down in order to rescue this one track!
