Red Holt: Drums

Ahh back to this blog's regularly scheduled posting...some nice Argo - Chess piano jazz from one of the masters: Ramsey Lewis. As far I can tell, this record has never surfaced on any reissue format since it first came out in 1961-1962 ish. This is the Ramsey Lewis trio smooth and melodic before hitting the big time with the 'In Crowd' in 1965. Rip is just OK - took a bit of work to dig up this copy. Enjoy

Another review:
This is a typically enjoyable and accessible early Ramsey Lewis Trio recording. The pianist, bassist Eldee Young, and drummer Red Holt swing their way through such songs as "Around the World in 80 Days," "Since I Fell for You," "Blues for the Night Owl," and "Autumn in New York." On "Hello Cello," Young does a fine job switching to cello. As is true of most of Lewis' Argo recordings, this one has not yet reappeared on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

UPDATE 21/10/2010 - I've uploaded a new pristine stereo rip with digital restoration - sound great! Nice to hear again the Ramsey Lewis trio in context with Argo's other piano trios of Ahmad Jamal and John Young. This is a nice side - soulful and deeply melodic, you can really anticipate the later mammoth success of the trio by sides like this.

  6. So glad to add to my Ramsey collection. The presence of one of my favorite songs - "since I fell for you" makes me very happy. Also good to see Buns and Jazzypier commenting here as well. The generosity of music bloggers has always given me faith in our human condition. I appreciate you immensely.

  9. RAMSEY LEWIS - MORE MUSIC FROM THE SOIL

I downloaded first the mono version and later the stereo version. The stereo sound in itself is nice, but the stereo version unfortunately also has an electric hum that is obvious before tracks and in quieter passages. I haven't heard it in any other of your transfers I have listened to so far, so something was perhaps not quite right when this one was ripped.

As for the title, "More Music From The Soil" is a kind of follow-up to Lewis's Mercury album "Down To Earth" which was subtitled "Music From The Soil". So why did Lewis record one album for Mercury in the midst of his long string of Argo albums you may wonder? Well, Max Roach, who was under a Mercury contract, had recorded an album for Argo, and to solve the situation, Mercury was allowed to record an album with Lewis.

  11. I imagine since you've not posted it, you don't have Argo 627, "The Gentlemen of Jazz", Ramsey Lewis trio. It's a beauty...delilah, black is the color, and more. I have a terrible pressing, terrible when purchased, and would love to copy it digitally. This is a really wonderful place to stop.
