UPDATE 20/03/10 - Just more housekeeping by returning to my archives and upgrading an earlier (unintentional) mono rip now ripped in true stereo. This side is a bit of an oddity in the Impulse A9000 series - I'm not sure that this was ever truly a working band or just a one off project/gimmick by Impulse! producer extraordinaire Bob Theile.

We've certainly got some credible players like Roger Kellaway and Grady Tate here but paired with two then recent Russian exiles/Cold War defectors who are not half bad either. Boris Midney, on horns is apparently still much very active in music these days , after a switch to disco (!) in the late 70s and has attained some success as a dance (!) music arranger.... Side even has the feel of a proto 'New Thing'/Free Jazz thing/Impulse! house style which gives it some weight and some gravitas. A diamond in the rough, enjoying this side again immensely!

  1. Grady Tate and Roger Kellaway are Russians? Who knew.

    Thanks for this Impulse obscurity.

The last track ("March for Igor") is an extra from a different source, I suppose? It is actually in stereo.

  2. Thanks, Chu for your added input. Since I'm a fan of Russian classical music - I'll give these "Russians" a try. Thank you.

  6. Enjoyed this one as well. A quintet with a majority of non-Russians, what else would one call it?
