Let's get this weekend off to a good start by posting another Argo rarity; this time a long lost side by the legendary Ramsey Lewis trio sideman/bassist Eldee Young! This was his first solo side, as he is joined by fellow trio member Red Holt. Young proves himself a major talent here with some groovin originals, most of the bass/cello solos are on the restrained side, and there's some nice support from Mal Waldron on piano and Leo Wright on winds.

Unfortunately, Young is no longer with us (an increasingly frequent occurrence for the remaining jazz legends today) as he passed away in Bangkok in 2007.
This posting is in his memory... This side has never been reissued in any form since 1962, I believe. Quite a very rare record! Fidelity mostly excellent, although during some of the softer bass passages, surface noise is sometimes audible, it gets better after the first two cuts.

Get it

  3. Eldee Young - Just For Kicks

In December 1961 both of Ramsey Lewis's sidemen got to make albums of their own for Argo; Red Holt's "Look Out, Look Out" was reissued on a Japanese CD some years ago, but this Eldee Young album has never seen CD light, so thanks for this rarity. Young and Holt would some years later form the Young-Holt Unlimited after leaving the Ramsey Lewis Trio.

On side A of this record, there seems to be some serious tape or groove bleed, since one can hear strong echoes of the sax several seconds before it actually comes in. This effect is totally absent from side B.

This album is fairly brief, and yet there are three unreleased tunes from the session. They may have gone lost forever in the disastrous Universal fire a few years ago.
