After a bit of a break from regular posting, here's a nice Argo-Cadet rarity: Red Holt's first solo album! This is an intriguing and rather enjoyable side, I was expecting something along the lines of an Art Blakey solo percussion heavy fest that were prevalent on Blue Note....yawn.

But to my surprise I found this to be a more eclectic collection that not only (inevitably) shows off Red's chops , but also illustrates some of his songwriting potential, along with highlighting some other strong players. The other members of the Ramsey Lewis trio make supporting appearances, and there's some nice contributions from local Chicago players Wallace Burton (incidentally the mentor of Ramsey Lewis) on sax and Roland Faulkner on guitar. A bit of an elusive side to track down on vinyl, although it did receive a limited edition CD release in Japan a few years ago which is now out of print and rather pricey. Nice fidelity off the original Argo stereo vinyl.
