Shirley Scott - Plays Horace Silver

Shirley Scott - Plays Horace Silver - Prestige PR 7240, Prestige Original Pressing, Yellow Label, Mono, Bergenfield, NJ Address

Shirley Scott - Organ
Henry Grimes - Bass
Otis Finch - Drums

Recorded - ? [not listed on sleeve, but November 17, 1961, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ according to most Prestige discographies]

Supervision - Esmond Edwards
Engineer - Rudy Van Gelder
Cover Design/Photo - Don Schlitten

Released - November 17, 1962

Here's a particularly strong but somewhat rare and obscure Prestige side: Shirley Scott Plays Horace Silver! Two tracks surfaced on hard to find Fantasy/OJC compilations, but the rest of the side has not been reissued on CD. This is Shirley at her most funky and straight ahead, probably due to the source material which entirely consists of Horace Silver covers. Nevertheless a quite enjoyable side, with production by Esmond Edwards in his pre Argo/Chess stint at Prestige. Solid fidelity off a rather worn, but original yellow label Prestige vinyl.

  9. Shirley Scott Plays Horace Silver

This is one of the Shirley Scott Prestige albums that Fantasy never got to reissuing. A bit strange, since one would expect Horace Silver's name to have a strong selling power. I have also never seen it in blogland before. So, many thanks for making it available.

It is a mono copy, and there are skips in tracks 2 and 3, but as they say, it certainly beats no sound.

The two remaining Shirley Scott Prestige albums that have been neither on CD nor in blogland are Scottie (Prestige 7155) and Now's The Time (Prestige 7440). I would love to see them appear here too. That said, there are also other Prestige organists who have albums that never were on CD, such as Don Patterson (who also recorded for Argo/Cadet) and Johnny "Hammond" Smith.
