This is personal sentimental favorite of mine: John Wright's Mr. Soul! I was quite excited to acquire recently an original pressing, yellow and black fireworks label, heavy vinyl mono copy of this beautiful side for a very reasonable price of 25$! For more information on this great Chicago soul jazz pianist, see an earlier post which covers some of his legacy, and includes a Prestige discography.
Although it's true that all Rudy Van Gelder recordings were essentially stereo recordings with mono fold-downs, it was a revelation to hear this particular mono mix (not heard since 1963) where Wright's powerful playing is accentuated in the one channel. Great production from RVG as always, with tasteful supervision/production by the great Esmond Edwards make this a true soul jazz burried treasure!
Get it (flac special of this beauty, one time only)
