And last but not least, here's McCoy's debut, Lonely Avenue - his shortest and the most elusive Prestige side of the 7300 series! The subtitle of the side, e.g " The Exciting New Soul Jazz Sounds of America's Newest Vibist!" heralds much, but this is only a modest and somewhat promising debut . It's also McCoy's most straight ahead/less funkiest side, and there's some interesting supporting players on here which I can't get much information about. McCoy's playful sense of humor is also on display here - watch for a quote from 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town' on track A4... that got your attention, didn't it?!

I've been on a Freddie McCoy listening marathon this week, with his sides on frequent rotation on my turntable, and I have a constant smile on my face - this stuff is fun, melodic and soulful... isn't jazz suppose to sound like this? The jazz purists can have their hard bop thank you very much. Great fidelity off a nice condition Prestige stereo vinyl.
Get it
UPDATE: Here's a nice discography (demonoid torrent) for all you completists out there. This is an important and rather undervalued soul jazz artist. His music deserves to be heard (additional biographical information including posted messages from the late McCoy from Morocco!, comments from McCoy associates and family members, quite heartbreaking really). McCoy was one of the most recorded artists on Prestige during the late 1960s, with a total of 8 sides (7 original, 1 compilation), but he wasn't all that commercially successful. Most of his sides received limited pressings, and the original vinyl is quite difficult to track down today. McCoy is also one of the most underrepresented jazz artists in the CD/digital age; only one side, Spider Man (PR 7444) received a CD release, but only in Japan, now out of print. So essentially McCoy's work has not been heard domestically since 1965-68! It's almost as if the jazz purist gatekeepers/hard boppers wanted to erase McCoy from jazz history. They've succeeded...until now!

  2. Thanks for all the Freddie McCoy Lps, I was not familiar with his work. Some is a bit dated (but not without charm, I lived thru' those years, I know the songs) but there are also some solid burners.

  8. So True my man-Love your comments on the great forgotten Freddy McCoy- Sort of similar to the bum rap so many incredible New Orleans and R&B cats got from the jazz snobs because they never forgot to swing. These days you can get a good laugh by going back and reading album notes from such pea brained "Critics" apologizing for the fact that possibly one might want to dance to the record being reviewed!(The Willis Jackson's are probably the best example of this condescending pablum) I find my tastes have changed much as well... in the 60s & 70's It needed to be pushing the envelope, but hey, now the more it swings the better.....such stylistic chops as these played with pure joy, finesse, and humor- MAKE MY DAY, and the ultimate proof is my 5 year old daughter and I love to dance to Freddie McCoy...kickin' it around the house. As well her favorite Jazz CD cover of all time is the Spiderman cover of Freddie's Japan release!

Thank you Sunship for your good work, well done.
Renouncing the life in 1969 and changing his name he dedicated his life to Hatha Yoga, Meditation and Service To GOD. After traveling
for years he settled and privately developed his concepts and his own approach to music.
1975-2000. His last request was to release
all his work, music and books, as his testimonial of a perfect system for those who are interested, especially the youth.
Hoping to release the brilliant and enlightening lifetime's work of Freddie McCOY dit Ahmed SOFI which includes unpublished Cd's and his books of philosophy and photo album of Hatha Yoga.

  11. re: Freddie McCoy discography

    Right On, brother!
This is what blogs can do for me . . . hip me to great stuff that for whatever reason I didn't already know. It's really sweet at this point in my life to find great stuff from way back that I never knew about. It really sucks to feel like you have tapped the mine and there's nothing left that you don't already know.

Sure don't feel that way now!

    Thanks, Sunship!!!!
