This is my second rare Freddie McCoy side of the night - and as the title implies, it's one of McCoy's first forays into a harder edge funk territory/sound. Legendary funk session drummer Bernard Purdie is on hand to lay down a nasty backbeat. Of course, the more traditional straight ahead ballads/McCoy soul jazz originals, and pop jazz tunes (the inevitable Beatles cover) are here as well. Just OK fidelity after some heavy digital restoration off a pretty worn out/scratched up Prestige stereo vinyl.

  3. Freddie McCoy - Funk Drops (1966)

    Thanks so much for this.

Who knew that the very talented Joanne Brackeen could be funky? It put a smile on my face.

  4. For those interested, according to AMG that is Alfred Williams playing organ on the non-quartet tracks. The liner notes don't credit the organ, which is strange since it one of the most prominent instruments on those tracks.
