Here's an amazing Jazzland (Riverside subsidiary) rarity and a lost piece of Chicago jazz - Chris Anderson's Inverted Image! Perhaps best known as Herbie Hancock's first mentor/teacher, Anderson was a musician's musician ; a true original with a unique approach to playing jazz piano. Anderson also had a compelling personal story, as a brittle bone disease condition and blindness limited his traveling and recording opportunities before his death in 2008.

This is one of his few leader dates, recorded in late 1961 on Jazzland, and never reissued. It's a true jazz obscurity! However, this is a beautiful side that deserves some wider exposure. There's also some great sidemen here including Philly Joe Jones, Walter Perkins, and Bill Lee (Spike's dad) who provide nice support for Anderson's mesmerizing playing . Excellent fidelity off a beautiful condition original Jazzland mono vinyl.

  1. Thanks for this rarity, didn't even know it existed. I saw Mr. Anderson play once, a trio with Billy Higgins, at Billy's World Stage, in Leimert Park, I think a year before Anderson died. Great, deep music, a very special recital. Thanks again.

  4. Thank you are two words that mean everything and so much more. I'm a big fan of Chris Anderson's music. I lost four bids on ebay for this record. I saw Chris Anderson and Barry Harris together. I saw him at Bradley's in New York with Billy Higgins. The man was truly music(al). Thank you again for this and all of these wonderful shares.God Bless.

Wow, another one of the few Riversides that have not come out on CD! Many thanks; your effort is much appreciated!

Anderson's style is very interesting; quite advanced for its time. One wishes that he would have recorded more. This trio formed the rhythm section for another Jazzland album around this time, "Long Night" by Frank Strozier, but after these two Jazzland albums, Anderson would not record again for another 15 years.

The liner notes mention that a whole album was initially recorded at the earlier Philly Joe Jones session, but Anderson was not happy with his own playing on it, so most of the album was re-recorded on a later session with Walter Perkins on drums instead of Philly Joe who was out of town. This means that if a proper CD reissue ever were to be made, there could be considerable bonus material to add. Unlikely to happen now, though.

The sound of the rip is good here, but if I may come with some criticism, it is that some tracks have been cut prematurely, while the ending piano tone is still ringing out. Minor quibble to be sure, considering that I get a rare album for free, but see it as a tip for future editing.
