Here's another intriguing Prestige Soul Jazz rarity: Red Holloway's Sax, Strings & Soul! Chicago tenor man Holloway was in the front line (along with George Benson) of one of Brother Jack Mcduff's best bands of the mid 60s, and also cut several solo sides for Prestige as well. This is the second of his solo credited sides - so far unreleased on CD and not widely heard for over forty years.

Not much is known about this particular side, besides it being cut with an uncredited orchestra in Stockholm sometime in the summer of 1964. Normally I'm not a fan of strings records, but Holloway's strong playing along with Benny Golson's nice arrangements lift this side out of dangerous easy listening-schmaltz-muzak territory.... Tasteful, if a bit romantic is how I would describe this side. I also like the cover photo/design which plays off the Nefertiti motif, which is a typical early 60s representation of African-American womens' beauty. Nice fidelity off the original Prestige stereo vinyl.

Get it
