I think we have a definitive winner here - this is the most obscure and bizarre side to be ever released by Prestige! Haughty Blue Note wouldn't dare release such a thing in a million years, but Prestige did indeed, which makes the label so fun and genius. This was the label's first and only attempt at the children's instructional/ educational market - Chief Red Thundercloud's Child's Introduction to the American Indian!
Of course, the 'Chief' had an interesting story: he wasn't particularly Native American at all (despite his strong assertions to the contrary), but all the tribal dances and chants on the record are quite authentic nonetheless. Call this side a 'genuine fake' and an amazing bit of Americana from the early 60s.

ReplyDeleteif you've not heard of the alternative metal band tomahawk, you simply must look up their album "anonymous". their previous work is not very memorable, but that album is entirely dark and bleak metal arrangements of native american folk songs. really good stuff.
