This post will definitively wrap up my coverage of the Prestige International 13000 series  (finally!) , here's a very rare compilation from that series- Folk Songs For Children!

Vinyl was in pretty rough shape [the orange label had stained the front cover as it was stored in someone's attic I assume  for some fifty years! ] and you may detect some unavoidable skips  - but there's some really rare, great and timeless Prestige folk recordings that deserve to be not forgotten...

Here's an interesting entry in the Prestige International 13000 series:Pick Temple's Pick of the Crop! The music on this LP is a mix of folk, cowboy music, and children's songs. Recommended!

Released - November 24, 1962

This is perhaps the most bizarre release ever by Prestige records: Hennie and Antonie Kubik's Czechoslovakian Folk Songs! As a fanatic Prestige collector, I've long sought the most obscure releases by the label to add to my collection.  Music here on the LP is of the typical ethnic folk easy listening variety of the early 1960s ,but it's worth a listen.

U. Utah Phillips - No One Knows Me [Prestige International 13040]

U.Utah Phillips - Nobody Knows Me - Prestige International INT 13040 - Blue Trident Label, Mono

Fred Rinehart - Banjo

Recorded - [unknown]

Recorded & Produced by Kenneth S. Goldstein ['RVG' in the dead wax]
Cover Design - Don Schlitten
Cover Photo - Ken Goldstein

Released - 1962?

Here's another amazing folk/roots gem from the Prestige International archives - Utah Phillips' Nobody Knows Me!  The late Phillips had an amazing life; long time close friend and collaborator of Rosalie Sorrels, labor organizer/political activist, folk singer, story teller, and poet. This is his debut side, and it's a powerful low fi/American roots classic which serves as a nice companion to Sorrels' Prestige International recording (see overleaf).

Rosalie Sorrels - Rosalie's Songbag - Prestige International INT 13025 - Original Prestige Pressing, Orange Label, Mono

Jim Sorrels - Guitar

Recorded - [unknown]

Recorded & Produced by Kenneth S Goldstein ['RVG' is in the deadwax]
Cover Design -Don Schlitten
Cover Photo - Currier

Released - December 4, 1961

To wrap up the year, I'm going to present some of the rarest sides from the Prestige International series from my own collection. To begin, here's an amazing artifact from the great American folklorist/folk singer of the American West - Rosalie Sorrels' Rosalie's Songbag!

This recording is absent from my Fall 1963 Prestige Complete Numerical Dealer Form, so it must have issued briefly in late 1961 and almost immediately deleted with no subsequent repressings - a rare Prestige, indeed! A fantastic and charming side, recommended.

I'm back again after a bit of a break to present more Prestige label obscurities from my collection. Here's in fact the final release in the Prestige International 13000 series - The Artistry of Greece!  Generally entertaining and spirited traditional Greek music not too dissimilar from the recordings of Prestige's Near East Records subsidiary.

Cover Design/Photo - Don Schlitten

Released - August 1963

Here's another quite obscure but intriguing entry in the wonderful Prestige International catalog: Ruth Ben-Zvi's Israeli Percussion!  This side has the feel of a somewhat austere formal classical music recital with some quite beautiful instrumental ensemble passages - quite a departure from the cheesy ethnic folk music of the early 1960s period of which I was expecting! For other examples of 'Jewish' music on the Prestige imprint, see my previous postings of sides by  Yaffa Yarkoni and my friend Tossi Aaron from the INT 13000 series.

Peggy Seeger - A Song For You & Me [Prestige Folk]

Peggy Seeger - A Song For You And Me - Prestige International 13058 - Original Prestige Pressing, Orange Label, Mono

Peggy Seeger - Vocals, Guitar, Banjo & Autoharp

Recorded - [dates unknown?, Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ]

Produced by Kenneth S Goldstein
Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder [Van Gelder in Deadwax]
Cover/Design - Don Schlitten

Released - 1963?

Today I'll be definitively concluding my ongoing series on Prestige's forgotten early 60s ethnic folk recordings: the Prestige International 13000 and Near East 4500 series with a final gem - Peggy Seeger's A Song for You and Me! See overleaf for a bunch of surplus Prestige International sides that I burned off earlier- onwards and upwards back to Jazz!

I'm going a bit full circle here -
I first became fascinated with Prestige's folk and world sides when I acquired the 1965 Prestige compilation Folk Songs with The Seegers last year. Acquiring this side was only ever for its catalog number (jazz collector OCD: must acquire everything in the 7300 series!) - but it's since become the Prestige Folk side that I listen to most regularly.

This particular recording is a long forgotten and tremendously obscure Peggy Seeger LP- recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and featuring Peggy solo, accompanied by her own instrumentation. As I once said before - this is less folk music, than timeless American root music.

Yaffa Yarkoni - International Song Collection [Prestige Easy Listening]

Yaffa Yarkoni - International Song Collection - Prestige International 13067 - Original Prestige Pressing, Orange Label, Mono [no cover!, a dollar bin acquisition]

Yaffa Yarkoni - Vocals
Walter Raim - Guitar & Arranger
Juan Amalbert - Conga
Robert Creash - Accordion
Spencer Sinatra -Flute & Clarinet
Stewart Wheeler - Bass

Recorded - May 1962, Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ

Supervision - Shel Kagan
Recording - Rudy Van Gelder [Van Gelder in Deadwax]
Cover - [uncredited]

Released - December 15, 1962

Here's more interesting stuff from the Prestige International archives courtesy of Yaffa Yarknoni! Yarkoni who passed away just this year, was a famous Israeli singer. Here she is paired with some real jazz pros - Walter Raim, Juan Amalbert of the Latin Jazz Quintet.

The arrangements are nice, everything is impeccably recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, but the material is strictly in the 'pop' vein for a rather specialized audience: the Jewish American community. The completist in me loves accumulating these "odd ball, orphan sides" for my collection, but I admit this stuff has a rather limited appeal.

Pola Chapelle - Sings Italian Folk Songs [Prestige Easy Listening]

Pola Chapelle - Sings Italian Folk Songs - Prestige International INT 13015 - Private CD Rip [25 cents!]

Pola Chapelle - Vocals, Guitar & Tambourine
Raphael Boguslav - Guitar

Recorded - [? dates unknown, Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ ]

Produced by Kenneth S Goldstein
Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder
Cover - [uncredited]

Released - 1961?

I believe that this must be the easiest Prestige International side to acquire. It's something I encounter often in bargain bins/record shows/ LPs posted on ebay which may indicate that a lot of copies were pressed in anticipation of a commercial breakthrough which never came.

It's essentially a side of old Italian folk songs (kind of a "Godfather" vibe) sung by the Italian American singer Pola Chapelle. Everything is tastefully arranged and sung nicely. I guess you could classify this as a type of 'ethno-folk-easy listening' music - pleasant but hardly dynamic.
Normally I wouldn't go for such 'diva' material - but it literally cost me a quarter. Ripped from a private CD (strictly a needle drop) which is about impossible to obtain.

Jeanie West - Roamin' The Blue Ridge/ Harry and Jeanie West - Country Music in Blue Grass Style [Prestige Country]

Jeanie West - Roamin' The Blue Ridge/ Harry and Jeanie West - Country Music in Blue Grass - Prestige International INT 13038 & 13049 - OOP CD Rip (Promo Cut Out)

Covers - [uncredited]

Released - INT-13038: July 1961?, INT-13049: 1962?

The Prestige International 13000 series is brilliant because of its diversity - for the first and only time on this blog here's some 'old time country'/bluegrass/ hillbilly music from Jeanie and Harry West!

Tossi Aaron - Sings Jewish Folk Songs For The Second Generation [ Prestige World + Interview with Tossi]

Tossi Aaron - Sings Jewish Folk Songs For The Second Generation - Prestige International INT-13055 - Original Prestige Pressing, Orange Label, Mono

Tossi Aaron - Vocals & Guitar
Linda LaBove - Guitar & Banjo
Lee Aaron - Mandolin
Kermit Downs - Bass

Recorded - Late 1961, Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ [Per Tossi Aaron]

Produced by Esmond Edwards & Kenneth S Goldstein
Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder [Van Gelder in the dead wax]
Cover Design/Photo -Don Schlitten

Released - January 19, 1963 [Tossi recalls Summer 1962]

Here's the second part of this blog's Tossi Aaron (That's Tossi, seated in the front, strumming a guitar) retrospective-interview (see earlier post with Tossi's comments on her career and her first LP) with coverage of her second and final Prestige side - 'Sings Jewish Folk Songs For The Second Generation'. I think this is the strongest of her Prestige recordings - the Yiddish adds an interesting touch - and there is a warmth and sincerity here which make this side stand out - not cheesy or kitschy at all. The concept of this side - an attempt to import old Jewish folk songs into a then contemporary folk context of the early 60s- was a unique one and entirely the idea of producer Kenneth Goldstein. Tossi adds:

"The Jewish album was recorded late 1961, released summer 1962, was to be a surprise and performance for my parents' 50th anniversary party at a hotel on September 22. Brought the "Preview copy" (as mine says on the cover), but I think it was empty. Showed it to all. Bass player was not available, the three of us performed about 20 minutes of cuts.

Forgot to mention another person you asked about- Esmond Edwards [Prestige Producer, later legendary Argo/Cadet Producer]. I recall him adjusting mikes and moving flat sound reflectors around us, being in the control booth with Rudy Van Gelder and Ken Goldstein. I remember him (brain's memory photo album) tall, thin, glasses, Black, articulate, well dressed. Bob Weinstock's [ Prestige Owner ] name brought no mind photos.

The Jewish album lists Kermit Downs as (real) string bass player, then a music major at Temple, jazz player, great ear and quick! It took three fast run-through rehearsals and he had it -- the whole sensitive feeling for the particular music. A reviewer said it was one of the few collections of Jewish songs that sounded joyful, not sad and "wailing" as do many others. It includes none of the too-often sung "Jewish pop"songs, and only one rare theater piece. You'll see that one in the notes."

Tossi Aaron - Tossi Sings Folk Songs & Ballads [Repost]

Tossi Aaron - Tossi Sings Folk Songs & Ballads - Prestige International INT-13027 - Original Prestige Pressing, Orange Label, Mono

Tossi Aaron - Vocals & Guitar
Linda LaBove - Guitar & Banjo
Lee Aaron - Mandolin

Recorded - Summer 1960, Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ [Per Tossi Aaron]

Produced by Kenneth S Goldstein
Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder [Van Gelder in the dead wax]
Cover Design/Photo -Don Schlitten

Released - March 24, 1962 [Tossi recalls sometime in 1961]

Tossi Aaron is my own personal favorite/cult artist on Prestige. Of course as an early 60s folk singer she doesn't easily fit into the canon/conventional narrative histories of Prestige (reflected in the enduring jazz cliche:"The difference between Blue Note and Prestige is two days of rehearsal" - which is fundamentally misleading anyway). However, with two (maybe three) releases in the Prestige International 13000 series and a single release in Riverside's Wonderland [Children Records] subsidiary - Tossi is an interesting and rather undiscovered part of Jazz label history. (For obsessive compulsive types/label completists, maybe).Tossi has a distinctive voice with interesting vocal phrasings - not polished and 'bell like' (e.g the booming soprano) like you'd expect in early 60s folk music - but a bit more fragile and vulnerable, low key and more considered. After hearing her version of "Gyspy Davy" on the 1995 Fantasy CD , "The Prestige/Folklore Years, Vol. 4: Singing Out Loud", (the sole representative of Tossi in the CD era) I immediately sought out her original Prestige sides on Vinyl which are quite difficult to find - both released in 1962-63, pressed in rather limited quantities and never reissued or repressed.

So it was with great delight and giddiness that I was recently able to connect with Tossi Aaron herself - who remains quite vital and active today in Philadelphia at 84 years old (Yes, very much still here, thank you very much!) After her performing career ended, Tossi continued as a music teacher/early childhood music educator (Orff), writer-editor, and activist with her husband, Lee.

Tossi has some interesting stories about her experiences in the Philadelphia folk music scene of the early 60s. She was long involved in the Philadelphia folk song society which arranged Bob Dylan's first landmark performance in Philadelphia in 1962. Dylan and his then girlfriend, the late Suze Rotolo, even stayed with Tossi and her family after this performance. The following Sunday morning they all had a pancake breakfast together. Dylan regaled them with tales - and played a fast game of dodge ball with Tossi's kids on her small front lawn!

However, what this blog is really interested in is the minutia of the Prestige International subsidiary... Tossi, generously after nearly 50 years (!) was able to provide some reminiscences about her performing career and some specific recollections of recording her Prestige sides. Tossi writes:

"
Yes, [both] recordings ["Tossi Sings Folk Songs and Ballads" (1961) and "Tossi Aaron Sings Jewish Folksongs For the Second Generation"(1963)] were made by Rudy van Gelder . Kenneth Goldstein (then prof at Penn was a friend, mentor, director and producer of the two albums. (I think it says so at the bottom of the album back covers! ) The third album [Folk Songs of Love", 1964, planned as PR-INT 13078) was never released that I know of, was cut at a live performance in Baltimore club "Blue Dog Cellar," engineered by Paul Rothschild [Future Elektra/Doors Producer]. Kenny put a stop to it. He was not the director, and 2 or 3 cuts, sung as warm ups, were not copyright free. The children's album ["A Child's Introduction to Going to School", 1963, RLP 1496) was made when I was teaching music at a private school-- the kindergarten teacher's comment? It assumes that children are afraid of going to school! I do have a vinyl of it- somewhere.
Album #1 [ This side] was recorded perhaps in 1960, summer and released in 1961. On the cover, I am wearing my husband's shirt because the photographer was there and didn't like my summer t shirt. The photo was taken at the first album session, all in one day, after recording. The guitar I am playing is an 1843 peg head Martin-- and that's another story! To promote the release, Bonnie Dobson and I were booked together at a nearby music store . Mine is #13027, hers #13021. Neither disc arrived in time. We alternated singing to the group and sang "Plaisir d'Amour" as a duet.
The biggest noise about the first album came due to " I Know You Rider" and that I was the first to record it. Liner notes: I don't recall where I learned it, but more than a year ago, the result was a home made private gift CD from Chicago, titled "Tossi's Children," of all those who recorded the song in its dozens permutations, including the Grateful Dead! Jerry Garcia admits he changed the song, making it male, dropping verses, etc. Didn't know till I saw it in Lomax book that it was collected from a young Black woman in prison ,originally in dialect, I didn't learn it that way never sang it that way. Still love its poignancy and flatted high note on "miss me" that touch the feelings.

I remain happy with true folk music, but am not performing. As I have for many years, I write a monthly column for the Philadelphia Folksong Society newsletter, on any related topic I choose to research and explore. All music is my life treasure-- Early, Baroque and before, a little jazz, rounds... all of it to share, always."

Isla Cameron & Lou Killen - The Waters of Tyne [Prestige Folk]

Isla Cameron and Lou Killen - The Waters of Tyne; Northumbrian Songs & Ballads - Prestige International INT-13059 - Blue Trident Label, Mono

[update: This side has always been of some fascination for me as it was one of the most elusive Prestige International sides to track down - I ended up ordering it from a record store in Finland and had it shipped to me in  North America. So it was my great pleasure that I managed to speak with Lou (now Louisa, an interesting story itself)  Killen at her home in the UK and  briefly chat about the circumstances of recording this side.

Fortunately, Killen remembered a bit about recording it - sometime in the late 59 and early 1960 in London. It was a day long session, starting with brandies at 10 am and finishing at night. Lou didn't know Isla Cameron particularly well - she was mostly active as an actor and recorded her contributions in the morning before leaving for an acting commitment in the evening. Killen and producers Ewan Macoll, Kenneth Goldstein stayed for the duration of the session. Looking back after nearly forty years Killen isn't particularly fond of this record and told me she hadn't listened to it since recording it!  She seemed astonished that I spent so much time and effort to track down this side. Most of her dissatisfaction relates to the quality of the vocals - which were a bit strained and horse after this marathon recording session.]

Isla Cameron - Vocals

Peggy Seeger - Banjo & Guitar

Recorded - [dates unknown, UK?]

Produced by Kenneth S Goldstein & Ewan MacColl
Recorded by City of London Studios [Van Gelder in Vinyl Matrix]
Cover Design - Don Schlitten
Cover Photo - Ewan MacColl

Released - 1963?

Here's the second of the two Isla Cameron rare Prestige International UK Folk sides - a collaboration with Lou Killen . Overall, I think it's the more polished and stronger side of the two. The contrast between Cameron playing off against the rather gruff Killen works well. There's a couple of nice duets as well.

Released - 1962?

Back again with more Prestige International gems - This time here's the first of two exceedingly obscure and rare sides from the long lost Scottish born folk singer Isla Cameron!

Cameron was a wonderful singer - think a prototypical Sandy Denny - and sometime actress (
Miss Mackenzie from “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”, 1969) who was criminally underrecorded. This incidentally is an original side - NOT a compilation as the title implies and has been missing from all UK Folk discographies.

Jeannie Robertson - The World's Greatest Folksinger [Prestige Folk]

Jeannie Robertson - The World's Greatest Folksinger (Scottish Ballads & Folk Songs) - Prestige International INT-13006 - Blue Trident Label, Mono [surface noise is a bit distracting at times, Vinyl not in the best condition - a true dollar crate acquisition, but the original recording wasn't the greatest either]

Jeannie Robertson - Vocals

Recorded - [dates unknown, UK?]

Produced by Kenneth S. Goldstein & Hamish Henderson
Recorded by Alexander Folkarde [RVG in the Vinyl Matrix]
Cover [uncredited]

Released - 1961?

Jeannie Robertson is back again with more traditional Scottish folk songs and ballads. These last few solo vocal/ Scottish sides are more than a bit esoteric, but nonetheless they're historically important recordings in the context of the modern UK folk revivalist movement, which makes it all the quite remarkable that they ended up on Prestige!

Leaving the land of Andalusia, here's an interesting folk release by the late Evelyne Beers. The use of the psaltery gives this side a haunting early music instrumental texture, but the song selection is a bit too eclectic.
