Released - November 24, 1962

This is perhaps the most bizarre release ever by Prestige records: Hennie and Antonie Kubik's Czechoslovakian Folk Songs! As a fanatic Prestige collector, I've long sought the most obscure releases by the label to add to my collection.  Music here on the LP is of the typical ethnic folk easy listening variety of the early 1960s ,but it's worth a listen.

Delia Murphy - The Queen of Connemara [Prestige Irish 35002]

Delia Murphy - The Queen of Connemara - Prestige Irish IR 35002 - British (XTRA-Transatlantic) Reissue (1967), Stereo

Delia Murphy - Vocals
Bob Creash - Accordion
Stuart Wheeler - Bass
Walter Raim - Guitar and Banjo

All Instrumental Arrangements by Walter Raim

Recorded - [unknown, not listed on sleeve]

Produced by Kenneth S Goldstein
Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder
Cover - Don Schlitten

Released - July 7, 1962 [original issue]

Here's the final and my favourite release in the Prestige Irish series - Delia Murphy's Queen of Connemara!

Jazz Discography Project does not have a release listed for IR 35002, but according to my research (and Prestige's Fall 1963 Numerical Dealer Form) , this was the release. Murphy was a trailblazing traditional Irish folk singer - this was her only LP side and it`s quite appealing with nice singing and arrangements by Walter Raim, of all people.

Mickey And Mary Carton - The Emmigrant Irish Boy [Prestige Irish 35003]

Mickey & Mary Carton - The Emmigrant Irish Boy - Prestige Irish IR 35003 - Blue Trident Label, Mono

Mary Carton -Vocals and Accordion
Mickey Carton - Accordion & Orchestra

Recorded - [unknown, not listed on sleeve]

Production - [uncredited]
Recording - [uncredited, but a small 'RVG' imprint is in the dead wax]
Cover - Don Schlitten

Released - May 4, 1963

Here's another release in the Prestige Irish series - Mickey and Mary Carton's Emmigrant Irish Boy! This side is a bit accordion heavy, but there's a deep Irish melancholy here which makes this side strangely compelling. This Irish American brother-sister sibling duo recorded one other side for Decca, but this side on Prestige has largely been forgotten.

Margaret Barry And Michael Gorman - The Blarney Stone [Prestige Irish 35001]

Margaret Barry & Michael Gorman - The Blarney Stone - Prestige Irish IR 35001 - Blue Trident label, Mono

Margaret Barry - Vocals, Banjo
Michael Gorman - Violin

Recorded -[unknown, not listed on sleeve]

Produced by Kenneth S Goldstein
Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder ['RVG' in the dead wax]
Cover - Don Schillten

Released - 1962?

Regular visitors of this blog will already be familiar with my fascination with Prestige's myriad of sub labels and subsidiaries of the early 1960s: Prestige International, Near East, Lively Arts, Moodsville etc. However, once was an amusing collecting side hobby has turned into a bit of a collecting black hole e.g a lot of time, energy and research spent on non-jazz recordings - yet the obsession continues!

Anyway, here's the first of my three contributions this month which will cover the most obscure of these subsidiaries- the Prestige Irish label - Margaret Barry and Michael Gorman's The Blarney Stone! This side is traditional Irish pub music - fiddlers and jigs etc..

I'm back again after a bit of a break to present more Prestige label obscurities from my collection. Here's in fact the final release in the Prestige International 13000 series - The Artistry of Greece!  Generally entertaining and spirited traditional Greek music not too dissimilar from the recordings of Prestige's Near East Records subsidiary.

Cover Design/Photo - Don Schlitten

Released - August 1963

Here's another quite obscure but intriguing entry in the wonderful Prestige International catalog: Ruth Ben-Zvi's Israeli Percussion!  This side has the feel of a somewhat austere formal classical music recital with some quite beautiful instrumental ensemble passages - quite a departure from the cheesy ethnic folk music of the early 1960s period of which I was expecting! For other examples of 'Jewish' music on the Prestige imprint, see my previous postings of sides by  Yaffa Yarkoni and my friend Tossi Aaron from the INT 13000 series.

Summer is almost over - but we're going out with a bang with the funnest ever release on Prestige - The Duke of Iron's Limbo, Limbo,Limbo! This is an amazing piece of vintage Calypso and marks this blog's return to an ongoing fascination and collector's obsession of mine :the Prestige International subsidiary. This side is also the perfect soundtrack for your next 'Limbo' party...

Tossi Aaron - Sings Jewish Folk Songs For The Second Generation [ Prestige World + Interview with Tossi]

Tossi Aaron - Sings Jewish Folk Songs For The Second Generation - Prestige International INT-13055 - Original Prestige Pressing, Orange Label, Mono

Tossi Aaron - Vocals & Guitar
Linda LaBove - Guitar & Banjo
Lee Aaron - Mandolin
Kermit Downs - Bass

Recorded - Late 1961, Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ [Per Tossi Aaron]

Produced by Esmond Edwards & Kenneth S Goldstein
Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder [Van Gelder in the dead wax]
Cover Design/Photo -Don Schlitten

Released - January 19, 1963 [Tossi recalls Summer 1962]

Here's the second part of this blog's Tossi Aaron (That's Tossi, seated in the front, strumming a guitar) retrospective-interview (see earlier post with Tossi's comments on her career and her first LP) with coverage of her second and final Prestige side - 'Sings Jewish Folk Songs For The Second Generation'. I think this is the strongest of her Prestige recordings - the Yiddish adds an interesting touch - and there is a warmth and sincerity here which make this side stand out - not cheesy or kitschy at all. The concept of this side - an attempt to import old Jewish folk songs into a then contemporary folk context of the early 60s- was a unique one and entirely the idea of producer Kenneth Goldstein. Tossi adds:

"The Jewish album was recorded late 1961, released summer 1962, was to be a surprise and performance for my parents' 50th anniversary party at a hotel on September 22. Brought the "Preview copy" (as mine says on the cover), but I think it was empty. Showed it to all. Bass player was not available, the three of us performed about 20 minutes of cuts.

Forgot to mention another person you asked about- Esmond Edwards [Prestige Producer, later legendary Argo/Cadet Producer]. I recall him adjusting mikes and moving flat sound reflectors around us, being in the control booth with Rudy Van Gelder and Ken Goldstein. I remember him (brain's memory photo album) tall, thin, glasses, Black, articulate, well dressed. Bob Weinstock's [ Prestige Owner ] name brought no mind photos.

The Jewish album lists Kermit Downs as (real) string bass player, then a music major at Temple, jazz player, great ear and quick! It took three fast run-through rehearsals and he had it -- the whole sensitive feeling for the particular music. A reviewer said it was one of the few collections of Jewish songs that sounded joyful, not sad and "wailing" as do many others. It includes none of the too-often sung "Jewish pop"songs, and only one rare theater piece. You'll see that one in the notes."

Continuing my ongoing Prestige Flamenco series, here's a nice collaboration of Domingo Alvarado & Rogelio Reguera. This side also has a striking cover by jazz producer legend Esmond Edwards in his pre-Argo/Chess days.

Released - 1962?

I'm launching a new Prestige Flamenco/Spanish music series on the blog with Los Morenos! These Prestige International sides are just about impossible to find today as not many were pressed originally (and they sold very little at the time, hence the survival of mostly free preview/promo copies) and they hold no collector cachet whatsoever (not exactly Tina Brooks' True Blue here).

However, they're fun and spirited recordings, exciting to unearth and discover for the blog. Also, most of these Prestige International sides were impeccably recorded by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, and sound fantastic - this is a nice bonus as other similar 'ethnic-folk' material of the time was often poorly served by other budget cheapo labels.

I'm not qualified enough to comment intelligently on the Flamenco, but according to my untrained ears, this side sounds good! Kind of like a soundtrack for a lost Almodovar movie.

Spero Spyros - More Golden Songs of Greece [Prestige World]

Spero Spyros & His Modern Grecian Ensemble Featuring Harula - More Golden Songs of Greece - Near East Records (Prestige)- NE 45002- Original Prestige Pressing, Light Blue Label, Mono

Recorded - [dates unknown?]

Produced and Directed by Chet Amsterdam
Cover Design - Don Schlitten
Cover Photo - Cristos Gianakos

Released - May 12, 1962

This posting concludes this blog's recent immersion in Middle Eastern/Greek/Turkish music, and also wraps up coverage of the Near East Records discography - Prestige's odd and rather short lived subsidiary that existed for 5 releases from May to December 1962.

As for this side, the addition of a female vocal counterpoint (the mysterious Harula referred to in the liner notes) to the proceedings spices things up momentarily. Interesting, but not essential.

Spero Spyros - Golden Songs of Greece [Prestige World]

Spero Spyros & His Modern Grecian Ensemble - Golden Songs of Greece - Near East Records (Prestige) - NE-45001 - Blue Trident Label, Mono

Recorded - [dates unknown?, straight reissue of Prestige International INT 13001]

Produced and Directed by Chet Amsterdam
Cover Design - Don Schlitten
Cover Photo - Cristos Gianakos

Released - May 12, 1962

This is the first of Spero Spyros' two Greek sides. Once again, documentation for this side/session is not available. I have a hunch that Spero Spyros doesn't actually exist and these are simply field recordings from Greece/Turkey of traditional musicians assembled by the producer Chet Amsterdam.

Spero Spyros - Anatolian Introduction [Prestige World]

Recorded - [dates unknown?]

Produced by Chet Amsterdam
Directed [?] by Luis J. Barreiro
Cover Design - Don Schlitten
Cover Photo - Charles Dexter Ward

Released - 1962?

This is the companion piece to Spero Spyros' earlier Anatolian side. Generally, I think it's a more consistent and better quality recording than Anatolian Feast. But on the whole, both sides are worth hearing, as there's a degree of authenticity, musicianship, and professionalism which makes them stand out from the typical exotica/lounge/'belly dancing' sides of the era. Strangely compelling!

Released - 1962?

I'm declaring Near East Records month on the blog - which translates into a lot of Spero Spyros! It's the collector's curse/lament to be ever the completist, so essentially I'm in the process of acquiring the entire Near East Records discography!! In the course of my extensive research, I could find absolutely no information on Spero Spyros, the ostensible leader of this side, or on any of the supporting players, the instrumentation, or any recording details.

Oudi Hrant - Eastern Standard Time [Prestige World]

Oudi Hrant - Eastern Standard Time: The Genius of Oudi Hrant - Near East Records (Prestige) NE -45005 - Original Prestige Pressing, Light Blue Label, Mono

Oudi Hrant - Oud
[uncredited] - Other Players

Recorded - [not listed on sleeve, dates unknown?, However, this is the original issue of the record, subsequently reissued as "Turkish Delights" also credited to Hrant, in the Bluesville series, as PR 1089]

Supervision - [uncredited]
Recording - [uncredited]
Cover Photo/Design - Don Schlitten

Released - December 15, 1962

I think this is my greatest find yet - Oudi Hrant's Eastern Standard Time! Originally the final issue of Prestige's rather short lived Near East Records subsidiary in 1962, this side is a near perfect distillation of traditional Turkish-Greek music crossed with Jazz. This music is both sweepingly magisterial & intimate, and played with so much joy.

George Mgrdic[h]ian - East of Athens [Prestige World]

George Mgrdic[h]ian - East of Athens (Greek, Turkish, Arabic) - Prestige International INT-13079 - Blue Trident Label, Stereo [I'm unsure of the exact providence of this pressing, but I'd lean to an early second pressing, as the regular orange Prestige International label is absent, if so it's quite amazing that it was repressed!]

George Mgrdic[h]ian - Oud
Orhan Nihat Yeginsoy - Kanoon, Vocals
Petros Kalivas - Clarinet, Vocals
Onik Menakian - Dumbag
Lampros Halkiopoulos - Guitar, Vocals
Stavros Tzouanakos - Bazoukee, Vocals
Mary Vartanian - Spoons, Zeals & Vocals

Recorded - [not listed on sleeve, dates unknown?]

Supervision - Paul A Rothchild
Recording - Rudy Van Gelder
Cover Design - Don Schlitten
Cover Photo - Stylianos Gianakos

Released - 1964?

This is another genius side from the Prestige International subsidiary: East of Athens (Greek Turkish-Arabic)! His name is misspelled on the cover, but I'm pretty sure that this one of the earliest recordings of the noted Armenian-American Oud player George Mgrdichian.

Along with Ahmed Abdul Malik, he was one of the first players to introduce the Oud and Middle Eastern music to Jazz. (See Record Fiend's research on the Armenian New York Scene and Mgrdichian's subsequent side, 'The Now Sounds of the Middle East', 1969) Here, Mgrdichian plays it mostly straight as this is really a great collective effort by some superb Greek-Armenian-Turkish musicians. Evocative and compelling music.

Chief Red Thundercloud - A Child's Introduction To The American Indian [Prestige World]

Chief Red Thundercloud & Co. - A Child's Introduction to the American Indian - Prestige International INT-13076 - Original Prestige Pressing, Orange Label, Mono [ultra-scarce - impossible to find!]

Red Thunder Cloud - Drum & Vocals
Princess Little Song Bird - Rattle & Vocals
Dancing Deer - Bells, Rattle & Vocals
Strong Singer - Bells & Vocals

Recorded - [dates unknown?]

Produced by Don Schlitten
Recording: Rudy Van Gelder
Cover Design/Photo - Don Schlitten

Released - September 28, 1963

I think we have a definitive winner here - this is the most obscure and bizarre side to be ever released by Prestige! Haughty Blue Note wouldn't dare release such a thing in a million years, but Prestige did indeed, which makes the label so fun and genius. This was the label's first and only attempt at the children's instructional/ educational market - Chief Red Thundercloud's Child's Introduction to the American Indian!

Of course, the 'Chief' had an interesting story: he wasn't particularly Native American at all (despite his strong assertions to the contrary), but all the tribal dances and chants on the record are quite authentic nonetheless. Call this side a 'genuine fake' and an amazing bit of Americana from the early 60s.

An Introduction To The Music of New Guinea [Prestige World]

Various Artists - An Introduction to the Music of New Guinea - Prestige International INT-25013 (Documentary Series) - Original Prestige Pressing, Maroon Label, Mono [ultra scarce and impossible to find!]

Produced by Kenneth Goldstein in association with Wattle Records, N.S.W, Australia
Edited by Ray Sheridan

Released - 1962?

I think this side constitutes the very definition of a way cool Prestige rarity/obscurity... Perhaps it's instructive and/or frightening to quote the opening paragraph of John Greenway's entertaining, but most certainly inaccurate liner notes: "This is the music of the world's last true savages... Some of the voices you hear in the 75 selections on this record come from the throats of men who have eaten human flesh". Ok!

That being said, once you become immersed in this amazing and small little bit of Prestige ethnomusicology , you appreciate that this side has its own independent aesthetic, which is often quite starkly beautiful.

Shinichi Yuize - The Artistry of Japan [Prestige World]

Shinichi Yuize Plays Koto Music ; The Artistry of Japan - Prestige PR 7504 - Fantasy Pressing, Green Label, Stereo

Produced by Samuel Charters

Released - February 18, 1967

Continuing my ongoing fascination with the Prestige label's historical and discographical oddities, this is a side of traditional Japanese koto music by Shinichi Yuize!

Certainly not jazz, but it's quite profound and beautiful music that deserves your attention. Perhaps the oddest and most unlikeliest title to ever surface in the main Prestige jazz 7000 series, it must have sold well originally in 1967, as it received a rare Fantasy repressing in the early seventies.
